REVIEW

The exciting new album from Juno-nominated jazz vocalist Karin Plato, on which west meets east in the first Toronto recording from this dazzling Vancouver artist. This is a breakthrough project, more risk-taking than any Plato disc to date. The songs are arranged in an edgy yet sensitive manner that pushes the boundaries and challenges Plato to move beyond her established comfort zone and sing with a greater dramatic range than ever before. The aggressive accompaniment by Toronto jazzers Nancy Walker (piano) Steve Wallace (bass) and Joel Haynes (drums) practically insists that Plato move confidently into territory never before explored by her on record. Then there's the ballad work; sensitive, moving, and displaying a maturity that only time, experience, and a natural artistry can provide. Downward Dancing is a landmark recording in the discography of Canadian jazz vocalist Karin Plato, and one not to be overlooked.
