Blue Again and Snowflake Season

The Edmonton Journal

She's lived in Vancouver since 1985 but if you listen to Karin Plato's two new releases, you can tell the jazz singer grew up on the prairies; in small town Saskatchewan in fact.  Both BLUE AGAIN and SNOWFLAKE SEASON feature a lot of wintery imagery in her own original tunes and the standards she chose (both albums on the Stikjazz label are available from Festival Distribution). What it really reflects is the singer's awareness of her environment... Both discs feature some of Vancouver's finest in small-group and duo situations: BLUE AGAIN includes the guitars of Bill Coon, Celso Machado and Oliver Gannon with bassist Torben Oxbol; SNOWFLAKE SEASON also features Metalwood members Brad Turner and Chris Tarry among others, but it's Plato's confident, tuneful phrasing and hip articulation that stands out as she weaves a musical spell.
