For several years Karin Plato has passionately researched Christmas music from various countries as well as the traditions that each country follows to celebrate this special season. She has developed a concert program that includes jazz, world and gospel renditions of festive material. Karin has performed her jazzy Christmas repertoire at The BirchTheatre at Capilano College in North Vancouver; at the Earl Marriott Theatre in Whiterock BC; at CBC in the Broadstreet Theatre in Regina Saskatchewan; at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre; at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton Alberta and at The Chuck Mobely Theatre in Quesnel BC. In 2000 she released a Christmas/jazz CD The Snowflake Season which included her original material as well as arrangements of festive songs. In the arrangements for the Song In The AIr concerts, Karin is featured with a special instrumental ensemble that includes piano, guitar, cello, percussion, bass and drums. Members of her ensemble include guitarist Bill Coon who is often a member of Karin’s projects as well as cellist Harold Birsten, the co-leader of the Vancouver based jazz string quartet BABAYAGA. The ensemble perform music from several countries in There’s A Song In The Air. Germany, France, Spain, Venezuela, United States, England, Mexico, Italy, Canada and The Netherlands all have Christmas songs that contribute to the seasonal sounds served up by Karin and her fellow musicians. |
