May 2003

In April I performed a concert with Denzal Sinclaire at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre. We had such fun singing our concert of duets and few solos too with our wonderful band, which included Bill Coon, Ross Taggart, Darren Radtke and Dave Robbins. Bill came up with some beautiful arrangements for several duets and we also performed two songs arranged by Ross and one arranged by Denzal. Singing with Denzal is a fantastic experience whether in the recording studio or singing live in concert. A wonderful night indeed and we thank everyone who came to hear us that evening. What a warm and welcoming audience we sang to!

Later this month (May 23rd and 24th) I will be releasing my brand new CD "THE STATE OF BLISS" at the Cellar in Vancouver. Denzal is a special guest on the CD that features several musicians in three different rhythm sections. Torben Oxbol whom I have worked with on other CD's in the past produced the new CD. It is always a delight to work along side Torben and I have a completely trusting relationship with him, which makes for a good working relationship. Torben is the one that suggested that I make a CD with three different configurations. It took me a while to warm up to the idea because I had another idea in mind but now I really am glad that we chose that direction. I was able to record with several of my favorite musicians all for the same project and was also able to choose repertoire that I thought would suit each particular rhythm section. There are a lot of musicians on the new CD. One group was comprised of Denzal Sinclaire (duet vocals on two tracks), Bill Coon (guitar), Ross Taggart (piano), Ken Lister (bass) and Craig Scott (drums). A second group was Bob Murphy (piano), Campbell Ryga (saxophone), Darren Radtke (bass), and Dave Robbins (drums). The third group was Lou Mastroianni (piano), Steve Holy (bass), Tom Foster (drums) with Dennis Esson (trombone), Brad Turner (flugelhorn) and Bill Abbott (saxophone).

For the CD release weekend at the Cellar I will be appearing with Bill Coon, Darren Radtke and Dave Robbins. We will perform several songs from the new CD and other material as well. This is the same group that I have performed with a number of times and each time I become excited because with these three musicians the musical possibilities are endless. All the things that I love about music: Emotion, expression, passion, spontaneity, intensity, dynamics, freedom and balance seem to exist when I perform with this trio. Bill, Darren, Dave and I will also be performing during the Jazz Festival down in Gastown on the Steamclock stage on Saturday, June 21st in the afternoon.
First though comes the weekend at the Cellar that I am looking forward to. Copies of the CD will be available at both performances and will soon be available in stores across Canada.
